Can you imagine going out with your friends for a night out at a comedy show but when you arrive you find that you’ve been signed up to do a set? In 2013, this is exactly how Shannon Oliver’s career in comedy began. Friends and family would always encourage Oliver to do stand-up because she’s naturally gifted to make others laugh. Shannon had previous experience in being in movies, independent productions and Denzel Washington’s “The Great Debaters”, but comedy wasn’t exactly listed on her bucket-list until that night.
“I was out chilling with my homegirls at this spot called “Words Over Latte”, they were hosting amateur night and had a bomb wing special going on. And anyone who knows me...know I lovveeeee chicken wings. I go to the restroom, comeback, chill, and start eating my wings. I heard the host say “AND NEXT UP, WE HAVE COMEDIAN SHANNON COMING TO THE STAGE”. Everyone starts clapping, including myself until I noticed that all eyes were on me. My girls had signed me up to do the show while I was in the restroom. Totally caught me off guard. I wiped my hands and walked up to the stage. I had played around before and had a few jokes saved in my notes on my phone but I wasn’t just 100% or felt that I was 100% ready. I got on stage, phone in hand, and KILLLLED IT. I started getting booked immediately after that show and its been constant ever since.”
Shannon works full-time, literally. She’s a wife, mom, and full-time nurse at a private OB-GYN practice. The lives of many rest in her hands so her mission goes beyond comedy. This is what motivates her to continue to reach for her goals.
“I just keep going, even if I don’t sleep. It makes me feel good to know I’m giving my all and I see results. I have people depending on me”. -Comedian Shannon
Shannon’s biggest influence in comedy is one of the original “Queens Of Comedy” Somoore. Which isn’t surprising , Shannon’s stand-up sets are authentic and just as raw. She looks up to comedy sensations like Kevin Hart and Will Farrell. Shannon currently resides in Houston, TX and her career has taken off like a rocket. She’s had the pleasure of opening for fellow comedians like Bill Bellamy, Billy Sorrells, DC Young Fly and tour with B.Simone. Which displays the level she’s on. In Shannon’s words, “every moment of her life is funny and filled with excitement, there is never a dull moment.”. She has countless shows coming up and truly booked & busy.
